REDDING, Conn. -- On the heels of a federal lawsuit filed by his family claiming a police coverup in the death investigation of attorney Gugsa Abraham "Abe" Dabela, the state's attorney says he has found no evidence of a conspiracy.

Stephen J. Sedensky, state's attorney for the Danbury area, said Friday that his office is still investigating the "tragic death" of Dabela in Redding on April 5, 2014.

"We again express our sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Dabela on their loss," Sedensky said.

Dabela's family, meanwhile, filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday -- two years to the date of his death -- claiming that Redding police were too quick to declare his death a suicide. The lawsuit claims authorities are trying to conceal a murder.

Two years ago, Dabela died from a gunshot wound to the back of his head, shortly after a car crash near his Redding home. The medical examiner ruled the death a suicide, which his family disputes.

"Although the investigation is not yet complete, it has revealed no evidence of any conspiracy on the part of the Redding Police Department," Sedensky said. "The Redding Police Department has cooperated fully with the Office of the State’s Attorney and the State Police throughout this investigation, as well as cooperating with the forensic expert retained by the Dabela family in 2014."

Anyone with information on the death should call the State’s Attorney’s Office in Danbury at 203-207-8670.
