David Pflug Jr., 65, New Canaan Banker

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – David Lloyd Pflug Jr. of New Canaan, died July 3 at Norwalk Hospital. He was 65.

Pflug was a 31-year resident of New Canaan and worked in banking for nearly three decades, helping lead debt-restructuring efforts with the governments of the Philippines and South Korea.

He was born Sept. 22, 1946, to Margaret King Pflug and Dr. David Lloyd Pflug. He was raised in Teaneck, N.J., and attended Xavier Academy in New York City and graduated from Cornell University with a degree in government.

Pflug received a master's degree in political science from Washington State University and then began his banking career with Manufacturer's Hanover Trust. Early in his career, Pflug was posted to Bangkok, Thailand, where he headed the bank's representative office.

Following a merger with Chemical Bank in late 1991, Pflug was promoted to the senior credit officer. He continued in that position after Chemical acquired Chase Manhattan Corp. in 1995. After the acquisition of Chase by JP Morgan in 2000, Pflug was named chief credit officer for the investment banking arm.

He married Patti Jo Vita while attending Cornell. After living abroad, they moved to New Canaan with their son, David, and daughter, Elizabeth. While his children attended New Canaan High School, Pflug became an avid supporter of their lacrosse and field hockey teams, making sure to leave work in time to make each of their games.

Pflug was a member of the Senior Men's Club and the Country Club of New Canaan. He also was a summer resident of Block Island, R.I. A voracious reader, he maintained an extensive library in his New Canaan home. His interests were largely centered on military history, mainly the Civil War and World World War II as well as spy novels. Pflug also enjoyed Pennsylvania State University football and the New York Giants.

He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Elizabeth (Timothy) Donahue, of Rye, N.Y.; a daughter-in-law, Kristen Eberhard, of Glencoe, Ill.; and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son, David Lloyd Pflug III.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan. Hoyt Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Norwalk Hospital Foundation , 34 Maple St., Norwalk, CT 06856.
