New Canaan Man Charged With Drunken Driving On ATV

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — A New Canaan man was charged with operating under the influence while riding his all-terrain vehicle around town recently, police said.

While on patrol, an officer hear a high-pitched engine and saw an all-terrain vehicle come out of the alley near Starbucks and go onto Park Street before making a sharp turn and almost fishtailing on Pine Street, Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said. The officer stopped the vehicle and spoke to the driver, police said. Samual Rutan,18,  had glassy eyes and slurred speech, the sergeant said.

The officer had Rutan go through field sobriety tests before the arrest, Ogrinc said. The incident occurred just after midnight Friday.

He was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, reckless driving, operation of an all-terrain vehicle without registration, no insurance, failure to have headlights, failure to have taillights, and littering for flicking a cigarette, she said.

Rutan posted $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court June 13, Ogrinc said.

There was a passenger with Rutan, who was not charged.
