NEW CANAAN, Conn. — New Canaan police are renewing their call for local residents to lock their cars and remove valuables after five cars were entered late Wednesday and items were taken.
"New Canaan Police wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and remind residents to "Lock it or Lose it," the department said via Twitter @NewCanaanPolice.
"5 more cars that were left unlocked in driveways were entered last night and items were taken. This crime is preventable. Lock your cars & remove valuables!!"
The police department has reported multiple stolen cars in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, Chief of Police Leon Krolikowski blamed a spree of car thefts and break-ins on suspected gang members from Waterbury.
Many towns in Fairfield County are experiencing similar crimes from the same gang, he said.
These incidents often occur during the early morning hours, with thieves targeting unlocked cars, Krolikowski said.
One resident responded to the police department Tweet by saying: "I'm sorry NCPD, how stupid are my fellow residents!?! We don't live in Mayberry! Wake up neighbors! #commonsense"
