A local woman became combative with police officers in New Canaan during an early morning traffic stop when she was allegedly drinking and driving.

An officer from the New Canaan Police Department on patrol at approximately 12:10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 19 spotted a car swerving and driving slowly, nearly striking a patrol car on Elm Street, prompting a traffic stop.

According to police, while speaking with the driver, New Canaan resident Margaret Jean Marshall, the officer smelled alcohol on her breath.

Police said that Marshall was not cooperative with the officer’s request to exit the vehicle to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. When she did eventually exit her vehicle, Marshall was uncooperative with officers and attempted to pull away when they spoke with her.

Police said that as a result of the interactions and her intoxicated state she was arrested at the scene. At New Canaan Police Headquarters, Marshall refused to submit to a breathalyzer and refused to be fingerprinted.

She was subsequently charged with interfering with an officer, illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, failure to drive in the right lane and failure to comply with fingerprint requests.

Marshall, 44, is currently being held on $1,000 bond and is scheduled to be in court on Monday afternoon to respond to the charges.
