The victim came home to find a message on her answering machine claiming she owed the IRS $4,000 and asked her to call back immediately, Patch.com said. When she returned the call, the man told her to purchase pre-paid debit cards and provide him with the barcode numbers, Patch.com reported.
The victim purchased two cards and loaded them with $500 each. After reading the barcode numbers to the scam artists, he was no longer on the line, Patch.com said.
