Wilms, who represents Norwalk and New Canaan, will begin his two-year term serving on the Legislature’s committees on Appropriations, Transportation, and Public Health.

The Appropriations committee handles budgets of state agencies.

Other issues the committee deals with are state employees' salaries, benefits and retirement, teachers' retirement, veterans' pensions, collective bargaining agreements and arbitration awards for all state employees.

The Transportation committee handles everything covered by the Department of Transportation, including highways and bridges, navigation, aeronautics, mass transit and railroads, the State Traffic Commission and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The Public Health committee deals with the departments of Public Health, Mental Health and Addiction Services, Developmental Services and the Office of Health Care Access.

Other matters covered by the committee include emergency medical services, all licensing boards within the Department of Public Health, nursing homes, pure food and drugs, and controlled substances, including the treatment of substance abuse.

“I am honored that (House Republican Leader) Rep. (Themis) Klarides has appointed me to the Appropriations, Transportation, and Public Health committees. I am anxious to get to work in Hartford and am ready to take on the significant problems facing our state,” said Wilms in a statement.
