Wilton Schools Project $535,509 Budget Deficit

WILTON, Conn. -- The Wilton Public School District officials are projecting an operating deficit of $535,509 due to cost overruns in special education outplacements and special education transportation, according to the Wilton Bulletin.

The Wilton Board of Education said the cost of providing for an influx of special education students is putting a strain on its budget.

Financial officials told board of education members during a recent meeting that a higher than expected number of special education outplacements, -- the district currently has 33 outplaced students -- in which students are sent to public and private special education schools, caused the deficit, as well as the added cost of transporting them out of the district, said the Wilton Bulletin.

The 2015-16 district budget included $2,195,000 to send students to private special education schools, an additional $665,000 to send students to public special education schools and another $1,050,367 for “settlements and other,” according to the Wilton Bulletin. As of Feb. 1, the district has spent $4,563,164, resulting in a $650,796 variance, said the Wilton Bulletin. Some of the overdue amount is being offset by retirements and savings in employee health care, added the Wilton Bulletin.
