Luizzi Enjoys First Year At New Canaan High School

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – One year into his job at New Canaan High School, Bryan Luizzi knows he made the right choice.

“It went very well,” said Luizzi, looking back on his first full year as New Canaan High principal. “It was a great year. I got to know the school, the students, the staff and the community.”

The first year since leaving Brookfield High School was successful, though Luizzi said his biggest challenge was to understand all the complexities of the New Canaan High organization, from the people to the school’s policies, practices and values. Throughout the school year, he said he spent about an average of 12 hours per day at the school, working with students, teachers and fellow administrators.

Luizzi said he was surprised about the strength and involvement of the New Canaan community in the high school and its activities.

“The high school is definitely the center of the entire community,” he said. “I think New Canaan is very impressive in that way.”

Of course, Luizzi said he was aware he would be compared to beloved former principal Tony Pavia, who left after nine years to become principal at Trinity Catholic High School in Stamford. Luizzi said he and Pavia are similar in some ways.

“We have a similar goal to help each (student) be successful in all ways,” Luizzi said. “It’s not something I shied away from. Tony has pride in the work he did and I was proud to step in and follow him. It’s a privilege to be compared to an educator like Tony.”

Luizzi said he’ll get to relax a little over the summer, planning to take a brief vacation to New Hampshire before preparing for his second year in New Canaan.

“After the school year, it’s a good time to catch your breath and re-energize,” he said. “Then, after a couple of weeks, you look forward to the students coming back and you’re excited for a new school year.”
