New Canaan High Grads Swelter As They Celebrate

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – If the members of New Canaan High School's Class of 2012 thought they were hot stuff before Wednesday, they warmed up a few more degrees as they marched outside for their graduation ceremony.

The newest New Canaan High graduates sweltered their way through Wednesday’s commencement. They wore smiles with their caps and gowns, and many toted portable fans and bottled water along with the diplomas they received after years of hard work.

The ceremony was tough with temperatures in the mid-90s, said Megan Paul, 18. But she said she and her classmates had fun reflecting on their special day. “Everyone who spoke was great. They did a good job,” said Paul, who wore Mardi Gras beads in honor of her future at Tulane University in New Orleans. “I’m ready for college.”

So was Amy DeBruycher, 18, who will go to Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. “It was very hot,” she said. “Good thing they gave us lots of water. I’m happy and relieved.”

Bobby Distler kept cool with a green personal fan. The final day on campus felt “weird” for him. But he enjoyed the time with his red-and-white clad classmates, many of whom wore shorts and T-shirts under their caps and gowns. “It’s difficult to explain,” he said. “It’s very bittersweet.”

Molly McKennan, 17, bound for Colgate University in the fall, could not put her emotions into words. “I can’t really say,” she said, smiling in front of her family on the field at Dunning Stadium. “It’s a mix of both happiness and sadness.”
