During the Mount David Summit, Bates undergraduate students share their research presentations on topics such as art, dance, film and video, music, theater, academic course projects and research involving the community.
Nelson’s presentation was entitled “The Symbolism of J.R.R. Tolkien: Reading the Lord of the Rings.” He was supervised in his research by Sylvia Federico, an associate English professor.
“Mount David Summit provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate creative and subject-area mastery, as well as hone analytical, research, writing and communication skills," said Matthew Auer, dean of the Bates faculty. “It’s also a practical dry run for life beyond Bates – in the workplace, in graduate study and in our civic engagement – where we are often asked to present, and we need to be prepared.”
Nelson is the son of Mr. and Dr. Paul R. Nelson of New Canaan. He graduated in 2012 from St. Alban's School.
Bates College is a liberal arts school in Lewiston, with 2,000 students. Bates was established in 1855, and is an equal opportunity college.
