New Canaan Students Flash Photo Skills at Exhibit

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Isabella Scandiffio can't eat muffins or pound cake, but the New Canaan High School senior can take pictures of those tasty treats.

The discovery that Isabella, 17, has celiac disease, which prevents her from eating gluten, may have pushed her to be a great photographer. “I think that was kind of a turning point and maybe photography was my calling all along,” said Isabella, who gave up on dreams of being a baker when she discovered she couldn’t eat what she was making.

New Canaan residents can see her shutterbug abilities at Through Their Eyes II, an exhibit at the Carriage Barn Arts Center featuring the works of New Canaan High’s top artists. The gallery will be on display through Sunday.

Isabella said she rediscovered her love of photography this year and is happy that residents and art lovers can get a look at her work. Her two submissions feature photos of dolls, including one called “Hip Hop Barbie.”

“It feels like an accomplishment. Kids around the country don’t get the opportunity to have a gallery see their artwork,” said the senior, who will attend the University of British Columbia next fall. “It’s cool that everyone else can see it and have an opinion about it.”

Meredith Jonker, 16, a classmate of Isabella’s in documentary photography, says she may pursue a career in news photography. She took a picture of a pair of shoes while visiting Washington, D.C. Meredith says photography is a passion, and she strives to take powerful and unforgettable pictures.

“I never thought I would have my work displayed for everyone to see it,” Meredith said. "It’s cool that our class gives you the opportunity you get to see everyone else’s work, too.”
