NEW CANAAN, Conn. New Canaans Stephanie Benko and Rami Hamdan won individual events and the Rams captured two boys relays titles in the Class L indoor track and field championships Monday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.
New Canaans boys finished third with 46 points, behind Windsor (62) and Darien (58). The girls finished ninth with 18 points.
Benko blew away the field to win the 3,200, winning in 11:20.17. Her time eclipsed her previous best this season by more than 18 seconds. Benkos time is the fifth best in Connecticut this winter, according to a national website that monitors track and field. performances.
Hamdan won easily with a throw of 49 feet, 3 ¾ inches, beating the runner-up by more than 15 inches.
The Rams won the 4x400 relay with Henson Orser, George Bennett, Isaiah Maisonette and Alex Spinu in 3:33.19. The sprint medley team won with the same quartet in 3:42.36. The 4x800 relay took second with Orster, Kalan Lysenko, Maisonette and Spinu.
In individual performances by New Canaan girls, Isabel Hetherington took third in the 1,600 and Isabelle Herde took fifth in the shot put. For the boys, Devaun Bovell took second place in the 55 hurdles.
