St. Luke's Football Gets Off To Fast Start

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – St. Luke School's first-year coach Noel Thomas Sr. introduced a spread offense this season to the Storm, and the results through the first two games have been encouraging.

The Storm’s defense has been impressive, too.

St. Luke’s defeated Berkshire School on Saturday, 22-7, to improve to 2-0. St. Luke’s moves to Fairchester Athletic Association play on Saturday against Hopkins School.

"The game didn't go as we had planned, particularly in the first half," Thomas said after Saturday’s game. “But I was gratified by the team's resilience and tenacity. Today we had a good test from a quality team and the Storm stood up to that test."

St. Luke’s scored 16 fourth-quarter points to pull away from Berkshire, of Massachusetts. Noel Thomas Jr. rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns. His second score, a five-yard run, put St. Luke’s ahead for good. He also had scoring runs of 21 and 30 yards.

Myles Gaines added 112 yards rushing on 19 carries, while quarterback Charlie Nelson completed 11-of-16 passes for 115 yards. Blake Stroman had five receptions for 119 yards.

The Storm’s defense has been impressive as well in the early going. Stroman had an interception and T.J. Simpson recovered a fumble in Saturday’s win. Freshman lineman B.J. Buckle, sophomore linebacker Noah Daniel and senior lineman Ron Holland helped stop Berkshire’s running game. Robert Wood’s hard hit caused a fumble, and Andrew Sudano and Bryan Latarocca had eight tackles apiece.

St. Luke’s defense pitched a shutout in its first game, a 26-0 win over Cardinal Spellman High School of New York.

St. Luke’s has won 13 of its last 14 games dating back to 2010. The Storm plays its next three games on the road before hosting Rye Country Day on Oct. 13. Rye Country Day has handed St. Luke’s its only league losses in each of the last two years.
