The CTDOT announced that on beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6, there will be a closure of Route 37 South slightly north - an estimated 150 to 200 feet - of the turn for Big Trail, near the Sherman-New Fairfield line for roadwork.

According to the New Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department, the road repairs are necessary due to “washout conditions threatening the road structure and strength.” The repairs are scheduled to take up to two weeks, though officials noted that the CTDOT won’t know a firm timetable until it begins excavating to determine what type of ledge and bedrock it is dealing with.

The Sherman School has been notified of the road closure, and will be coming up with a new bus plan. Mail carriers will be using alternate routes to service Big Trail and Hardscrabble Road residents.

Officials noted that “Big Trail and Hardscrabble Road residents will not be able to travel north onto Route 37 to access Sherman that way. They can access Sherman via Hardscrabble Road by taking Hardscrabble Road to what is Chapel Hill Road and can connect to Route 37 that way. Or, they can continue south on Route 37 into New Fairfield and connect to Sherman via Route 39.”
