Connecticut's Unemployment Rate Continues Decline, Dips To 6.7 Percent

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- After Connecticut added 1,700 jobs in June, the unemployment rate declined to 6.7 percent, according to the state Department of Labor.

That rate is down two-tenths of a percentage point from the May jobless rate of 6.9 percent. It is also a significant decline from the unemployment rate in June 2013 of 7.9 percent. The unemployment rate of 6.7 percent has not been this low since December 2008, the state said.

“Connecticut’s unemployment rate continues to decline for all the right reasons, such as broad industry job growth coupled with declining unemployment, and an expanding labor force,” said Andy Condon, director of the Office of Research at the Labor Department. “Summer seasonal hiring seems to have begun at expected rates.”

This is the fifth straight monthly increase in jobs, and Connecticut has now added 5,300 jobs for the year, according to the Labor Department.

Since the recession, Connecticut has now recovered 73,500 positions, or 61.7 percent of the 119,100 jobs lost in the state during the March 2008 to February 2010 employment downturn.

The national unemployment rate for June was 6.1 percent.
