NORWALK, Conn. – A commitment from high-end fashion retailer Nordstrom to open a full-line store in the proposed 95/7 mall could make Norwalk into a premier shopping destination.

Nordstrom and mall developer General Growth Properties announced the new store together on Thursday. The upscale department store would be part of the 975,000-square-foot mall that Chicago-based GGP is seeking to develop on West Avenue near the entrances to I-95 and Route 7.

In addition to retail space, the plan would also include hotel accommodations and an indoor public space. Plans are currently under review by the city.

“Our goal is to provide a unique shopping destination that serves as a gathering place for great retail, dining and entertainment,” said GGP CEO Sandeep Mathrani. “Securing Nordstrom as an anchor shows GGP’s strategy to bring high-quality stores to this exciting new development that will complement existing merchants in South Norwalk and attract new customers.”

The Nordstrom would be a three-level store with 150,000 square feet of space. The plan is to open the store by 2018. It would be the second Nordstrom in Connecticut -- there is one in Farmington at the WestFarms Mall. There is also one at The Westchester in White Plains, N.Y.

“We’re glad we have an opportunity to serve our existing Fairfield County customers closer to home as well as customers new to Nordstrom in a compelling, new retail destination,” said Jamie Nordstrom, president of stores for the Seattle-based Nordstrom Inc. “GGP is a terrific partner and we are excited to be a part of this new regional shopping center.”

Mayor Harry Rilling said the city first heard the news Thursday and said it could present good opportunities for Norwalk.

“I think it’s a relief to a lot of people to realize that GGP is able to bring in high-end retailers like Nordstrom,” Rilling said, adding that he hoped that it would encourage other retailers to come to the area.

He said he hopes that Nordstrom and the 95/7 mall would bring in people from around Fairfield County and make Norwalk a destination for shoppers.

“The most exciting thing to me is the job opportunities. Norwalk has 5.2 percent unemployment, which is below the state average, but a lot of people are struggling and would like to have that opportunity for a part-time job and extra money for their kids, families and expenses,” Rilling said.
