BREWSTER, N.Y. - After opening the season with six wins in its first seven games, the John Jay varsity hockey team fell into a pattern.
The Indians alternated losses and wins in their last four games. John Jay did not want to continue this pattern when it took the ice against Lakeland/Panas, Friday.
Weve had trouble with our starts, recently, and found ourselves down against Brewster and Pelham, captain Frazier Bostwick said. We stressed getting off to a good start and we did.
John Jay scored twice in the first period and added two goals in the second in a 4-1 win in a Conference I non-league game at Brewster Ice Rink.
Bostwick scored twice, including one with four seconds remaining in the second period, and Jack Grimm added a goal and an assist. Freshman goalie Kyle St. Denis turned aside 21 shots.
The Indians improve to 9-3 and return to the ice Friday, Jan. 20, against Mahopac. You always want to have a win, especially when you come off of a loss, Bostwick said. Now that we got this win, hopefully we can get another streak going.
Grimm opened the scoring at the 5:45 mark of the first period, with a power-play goal, assisted by Mark Leprine. Five minutes later, Bostwick doubled the lead as Grimm led a two-on-one. He fed Bostwick and went top shelf for a 2-0 lead.
We had most of the play in their zone and we had a lot of good shots, said Bostwick of John Jays play in the first period.
Lakeland/Panas (2-11) did cut the lead in half on a Ryan Lynagh goal, with 9:28 remaining in the second period. John Jay was determined to regain its two-goal lead and Shawn Smith did this with 2:07 in the period. With the clock dwindling down to the final seconds, Bostwick netted his second, with four ticks left.
