Several residents have complained recently, claiming that a group unaffiliated with the department has made the rounds, collecting funds to outfit the unit with ballistic vests.

Police said that the residents who received the phony phone calls said the caller came up as “USK9NY” on the caller ID.

According to police, recent advances in telephone technology, including Internet calling, voice-over and IP spoofing, has led to an increase in the number of telephone-based frauds and scams. Scammers have recently been targeting the elderly and vulnerable members of the community.

Anyone looking to make a donation to the Fairfield Police Department's K-9 Unit can do so here.
