Emergency Management Director Mike Handler said he and other department heads met Friday morning to discuss some issues leading into the storm, including making sure town vehicles are ready and there are adequate supplies of food, water and sand. The town’s emergency operations center will likely open Saturday evening, but the level of staffing for it will not be determined until Sunday, when officials have a better idea of Sandy’s path.
Handler is asking residents to register at SmartPrepare, a site to enter vital information that will help the town respond better for emergencies, medical situations and evacuations. Handler expects to issue an update to residents through a reverse 911 outcall message and a post on the emergency management office’s Facebook page.
Handler said most residents are aware of what may come and have already began preparing. "Today, people are really prepared, based on what we're seeing," he said. "They don't need to hear it from me."
The annual Halloween Parade is still set to take place beginning at noon Sunday, according to Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tucker Murphy. However, events may take place inside the Outback Teen Center if rain is heavy. Murphy said use of the Outback, behind New Canaan Town Hall, is “our Plan B,” and she will make the call on Sunday morning.
Murphy hopes the rain stays away so the parade can take place as usual, especially with last year’s Halloween festivities being relocated to New Canaan Town Hall following an unusual October snowstorm.
