NEW CANAAN, Conn. Another scam targeting an elderly New Canaan resident, this one involving computer software, is being investigated by police.
Police said a 66-year-old New Norwalk Road resident was contacted on April 5 by a man who said he was calling from Microsoft. Police said the man told the woman resident that her home computer was infected and was showing error messages on a Microsoft server. The woman was advised to purchase software for $145 so the company could have access to her computer and clear the issue. She agreed, police said. Police said the couple eventually purchased a new computer. On April 18, the man called back. The womans 82-year-old husband picked up and was told their computer was again infected. Police said the husband became suspicious and mentioned that they had a new computer. The man then hung up.
Police are asking residents to be cautious when someone calls to ask for money or to perform services.
In other police news:
Police are investigating three vehicle break-ins near the New Canaan Racquet Club. Police said the break-ins occurred last Tuesday between 9:15 and 10:30 a.m. In one case, a 39-year-old Darien woman parked her car at about 9:15 a.m. in an underground parking lot and came back to find the passenger side window smashed and her Louis Vuitton purse stolen from the floor on the passenger side. Police said the bag, valued at $500, contained about $100 cash, the victims drivers license and several credit cards.
In a second incident, a 50-year-old woman from South Salem, N.Y., went into the club after parking at about 9:30 a.m. and returned an hour later to see that her vehicles rear passenger side window was broken. Missing were a Dooney & Bourke bag valued at $300, a Dooney & Bourke wallet valued at $200, $300 in cash, her drivers license and several credit cards.
A third vehicle parked in the racquet club lot had a passenger side and hatch window broken, but a purse belonging to the owner, a 37-year-old New Canaan woman, was concealed by a storage hatch. Nothing was stolen, police said. They believe all three break-ins are connected.
Police are investigating the theft of about $1,400 in copper downspouts from a house under construction on Cedar Lane. Police said someone stole about 35 feet of downspout between March 23 and 25 and that another 40 feet was taken between 4:30 p.m. April 13 and 8:05 a.m. April 14. Both incidents were reported to police last Tuesday. Another $600 in copper was damaged, police said.
