New Canaan Couple Targeted in Software Scam

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Another scam targeting an elderly New Canaan resident, this one involving computer software, is being investigated by police.

Police said a 66-year-old New Norwalk Road resident was contacted on April 5 by a man who said he was calling from Microsoft. Police said the man told the woman resident that her home computer was infected and was showing error messages on a Microsoft server. The woman was advised to purchase software for $145 so the company could have access to her computer and clear the issue. She agreed, police said. Police said the couple eventually purchased a new computer. On April 18, the man called back. The woman’s 82-year-old husband picked up and was told their computer was again infected.  Police said the husband became suspicious and mentioned that they had a new computer. The man then hung up.

Police are asking residents to be cautious when someone calls to ask for money or to perform services.
