NEWTOWN, Conn. — President Barack Obama said Friday that the nation has endured too many mass shootings and it's time to take "meaningful action" following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

"As a country we’ve been through this too many times, whether it's an elementary school in Netown, or a shopping mall in Oregon, or a temple in Wisconsin, or a movie theater in Aurora or a street corner in Chicago," Obama said in a news conference broadcast Friday afternoon.

"We’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics.”

Obama appeared to be wiping away tears after saying he was not reacting to the shooting as a president but as a parent.

"The majority of those who died today were children, beautiful little kids between the ages of five and 10 years old," Obama said. "They had their entire lives ahead, birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. Among the fallen were also teachers, men and women who devoted their lives to helping the children fulfill their dreams."

Obama also spoke of the trauma the survivors may suffer.

“Our hearts are broken today for the parents, grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children and for the families of the adults who were lost," Obama said. "Our hearts broken for the parents of survivors  For as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children's innocence has been torn away from them too early, and there are no words ease their pain."

Uncle Dave:

@rozannegates
From what we know now the guns were legal and in the shooters mothers house. They were legal. The son takes them which means they are now ilegal.
The son takes the guns and does the horrible deed.He could have used a knife or any other device.Supposed he drove a vechile into the class rooms.

It used to be that folks who were not stable could be taken to a mental health facility (Fairfield Hills) to be evaluated. All it took was a call to the local PD.
That was decided to be aginst our rights.
Now we have everyone who might not be "stable" running around the streets and nothing can be done.
It is we the people who tollerate the "laws" that are responsible not the guns.

rozannegates:

Guns. Destroy them. Abolish the 2nd Amendment if necessary. Congress has blood on its hands. Every person serving in government should do everything necessary to abolish the manufacturing and sales of guns. Guns do one thing - they kill people. There is not one person in the Middle East who poses as much of a threat to you as your neighbor with a gun. This country will destroy itself from within. It is a country out of balance. It is a country that would rather see little kids killed than to protect us from guns. What is wrong with us?

Tim T:

correction Republicans in the .Congress have blood on their hands

It was suggested tonight if you have decoration lights on your home leave them off it made sense .Only thing I could add to such tragedy is to pray for all of those invloved.
