The train, which left Grand Central at 11:39 p.m. Wednesday, lost power due to damage on the third rail after midnight, NBC Connecticut said.

A rescue train arrived after about 90 minutes, and it took about 40 minutes to get to Woodlawn, arriving after 2 a.m., NBC Connecticut said. Passengers were then transferred to a regular train, the report said.

Passenger Adam Benalt said via Twitter ‏@ABenalt the train was stuck between Fordham and Woodlawn. "3rd rail is busted, conductor said they knew but saw it too late," Benalt said via Twitter.

He said conductors handed out boxes of drinking water, marked Aqua Blox, an 8.5-ounce box marked with a five-year shelf life.

"NEVER a good sign when they break out the #emergencydrinkingwater," Benalt said via Twitter.

Trains began running again at about 3 a.m., and the morning commute wasn't affected, NBC Connecticut said.
