Pit Stop Leads to Drug Bust

Jeannete Olavencia of Stamford might think New Canaan Police are a bit too helpful after her experience on August 17. A passing officer saw Olavalencia, 24, parked on the side of Adams Lane near Ponus Ridge Road, and stopped to ask if she and her passenger needed help. When Olavalencia rolled down her window, the officer noticed a strong smell of marijuana smoke, and asked her if there were any drugs in the car. Olavalencia handed over a partially smoked marijuana cigarette, and admitted it was hers. Police found no other signs of drugs in the car, but discovered that Olavencia, the driver, did not have a valid driver's license. They charged her with possession of marijuana and driving without a license, and released her on a promise to appear in court on Aug. 26.

Also from the police blotter :

• James F. French, Jr. of Harrison Avenue turned himself in after learning about a warrant for his arrest from Connecticut State Police. In November 2009, state troopers near Hartford stopped French, 40, and charged him with driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, and driving an unregistered vehicle. French failed to make his July 27 court date. The state police issued a PRAWN (Paperless Re-Arrest Warrant Network) warrant for French, which the New Canaan Police served when French came into the station Aug. 17. French received a charge of second-degree failure to appear, and posted his $1,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court Aug. 31.
