Peter Van Dyk Berg, 89, Of New Canaan, Owned Landmark Management, Inc.

NEW CANAAN, Conn. - Peter Van Dyk Berg, longtime resident of New Canaan and Walpole, N.H., died Monday, Dec. 16. He was 89.

Berg was born April 14, 1924, in Orange, N.J., to Henry and Margaret Purdy Berg Jr. He grew up in Orange, N.J., and graduated from The Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J. in 1942. After high school he attended Yale University in New Haven, Conn., where he was a member of the class of 1945. He was on military duty from 1943 to 1946. He received his mechanical engineering degree from Yale in 1948 and his J.D. from Yale in 1952. He joined the law firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft in New York in 1957 and became the firm’s youngest partner in 1961. He left Cadwalader in 1974 to start his own firm, Landmark Management, Inc., where he worked until his death. Berg was a member of the Bay Head Yacht Club in Bay Head N.J. as a youth, was a proprietary member of the Mill Reef Club, Antigua, British West Indies for 25 years, and was a member of the Union Club in New York City.

Berg is survived by his spouse, Theodora of Walpole, N.H.; sons, Peter Van Dyk Berg, Jr. of Bellows Falls Vt., and Christopher Babcock Berg of Columbia, S.C.; daughters, Bettina Blackett of Norfolk, Mass., and Anne Martindale Berg of Waynesville, N.C.; step-children, Henry Taylor Gibson of West Palm Beach, Fla., Theodore Gibson of Delray Beach, Fla., Joy Gibson of Black Rock, Conn.; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a niece, a nephew; and other relatives. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Henry Berg III; and step-daughter, Edith Gay Gibson.

A memorial service will be announced for May 2014 in Walpole, N.H.
