New Canaan Police Chief Dealing With Staffing Issues

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski has filled one of two open positions, and plans to have the department's 47th officer hired and ready to attend the Police Academy by April 1, despite budget questions on paying for the positions and overtime issues, according to the NCAdvertiser.

During the budget process, the Board of Selectmen took out the money for the last officer until it was needed, but the Finance Department returned the money to the budget, which is set for a final vote Wednesday, March 23, said the NCAdvertiser.

In addition to filling position, the board also has been questioning the amount of money the department spends on overtime pay, according to the NCAdvertiser. The chief told the Town Board he has never been provided enough money for overtime and the department's average the past six years for overtime was $507,000 versus the $379,000 that was budgeted, said the NCAdvertiser.. The board has recommended $431,000 for overtime for next year, added the NCAdvertiser.
