NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- A parent is facing drunken driving charge after he allegedly was under the influence of alcohol when he went to pick up his child at St. Aloysius School on Wednesday afternoon, New Canaan Police said.

Paul M. Sayegh, 45, of 8 Lori Lane, Norwalk, was charged with operating under the influence and risk of injury to a child, police said.

Police were contacted just before 3 p.m. Wednesday on a complaint of a possibly intoxicated parent, police said. When officers arrived, they saw a vehicle backing out of a parking spot and noticed the child didn't seem to be properly secured in the seat, police said. After stopping the vehicle, officers found several pieces of cut wood in the seat near the child and also found a liquor bottle in the center console, police said.

An odor of alcohol could be detected on the driver's breath, and he failed the standardized field sobriety tests, police said. He declined to perform a breath test after he was taken to police headquarters and was released on $5,000 bond.

Sayegh is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 23.
