In one theft, the driver’s side rear window was smashed of a Darien woman’s 2010 Mercedes-Benz. She had parked next to the Waveny House at about 9:20 a.m. Sept. 19, and when she returned an hour later, her vehicle had been broken into, police said.
Also stolen was a $2,000 Givenchy purse, a $200 Stuart Weitzman wallet and $200 in cash as well as debit and credit cards.
A witness saw a newer red vehicle parked near the Mercedes-Benz with two people inside, police said.
The description of the vehicle matched a 2013 red Ford Explorer with California license plates that is suspected in similar car break-ins in Darien recently, police said.
Investigating that case was the start of a busy day for New Canaan police. At about 10:45 a.m., a Darien woman reported that the rear window was smashed on her Lincoln Navigator, police said. The car was parked on Lapham Road near Talmadge Hill Road.
The woman’s $100 cork purse along with three pairs of sunglasses worth $200 each, $450 in cash and credit cards were stolen in the break-in, police said.
A little more than two hours later, a $200 Coach purse and $150 in cash were stolen from a 54-year-old Stamford woman’s X3 as she went to walk her dog in Mead Park, police said.
She said she thought she had locked the car door, but police said there were no signs of forced entry in the vehicle.
The final theft wasn’t reported until 4 p.m., but it occurred at about 11 a.m. when a New Canaan woman parked in Mead Park and left her vehicle unlocked to buy a sandwich, police said. She realized that she didn’t have her purse but believed she had left it at home, according to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc.
It wasn’t until later that afternoon that the woman realized her purse had been stolen, police said. Her purse and its contents, including a red leather wallet and credit cards, were taken police said.
Thefts from four motor vehicles in Darien were reported on that same day, Ogrinc said.
