The first arrest took place at about 9 p.m., when a 48-year-old man who admitted to smoking “just a little bit” of marijuana was given an infraction for possession of drug paraphernalia after a metal pipe was found, New Canaan police Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said. A K9 unit walked around the vehicle and indicated the presence of drugs, she said.
A 66-year-old Stamford man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after officers noticed his vehicle crossing the double-yellow line before reaching the checkpoint, Ogrinc said. The man admitted to having a few drinks and was released on a promise to appear on July 10, the sergeant said.
The third, who was 19 years old, was stopped heading north and denied drinking or doing drugs, however, got nervous and hesitated when officers asked whether any drugs were in the vehicle, Ogrinc said. Police found two small bags of marijuana, a metal grinder and three pipes after a K9 indicated drugs in the vehicle, she said.
He was issued a misdemeanor summons for driving with a suspended license, and an infraction for possession of marijuana less than a half-ounce, and two counts of drugs paraphernalia, Ogrinc said.
Officers stopped every vehicle heading in both directions during the checkpoint, Ogrinc said.
