In order to meet the requirements, a state representative candidate has to raise $5,000 from at least 150 contributors, in the amount of $5 to $100 per donation.

Those who qualify for the CEP are awarded $27,850 toward their general election campaign. Garfunkel, a Democratic candidate, was unanimously endorsed during the party’s nominating convention in May.

“A good 85 percent of the contributions were contributions of $50 or less,” said Christopher Potts, Garfunkel’s 2014 treasurer. “Andy’s support comes from throughout the district, from all walks of life and from all political stripes.”

Garfunkel is running to replace state Rep. Larry Cafero (R-Norwalk), who is retiring from the 142nd District. He will run in November against the winner of the Republican primary between Emily Wilson and former Norwalk Board of Estimate and Taxation Chairman Fred Wilms on Aug. 12.

Garfunkel added, “It’s almost reached the point of cliché to express gratitude for the overwhelming support demonstrated by these donations, but it has to be said. I am extremely honored to know that so many of my fellow Norwalkers, and people in New Canaan, who are getting to know me through this campaign, have shown their support for my candidacy.”

Garfunkel also noted the importance of planning.

“This area is poised to contribute to a slowly recovering economy,” he said. “The ingredients are all there, if we focus on rebuilding in a smart and effective way. If we can improve our regional infrastructure, develop sustainable energy and environmental policy and spark small business growth to create jobs; then we’ll be looking at a remarkably different future than the one we are contemplating now.”

He added that he looks forward to discussing the issues of educating the young, nurturing the elderly and supporting families and businesses who wish to stay in Connecticut with the voters. He said he wants to ensure that the best solutions are implemented properly.

“Andy will represent his district well up in Hartford,” said Edwin Camacho, chairman of the Norwalk Democratic Town Committee. “He has consistently dedicated himself to improving the community and has shown himself to be well-suited to working with people on both sides of the aisle to accomplish important objectives.”
