Whoops! Lautenberg takes a tumble, goes to hospital

Authorities confirmed the 86-year-old Senator was hospitalized Monday night after falling down at home.

Frankie fall down and go boom!

The Paterson-born Lautenberg, you may remember, left Capitol Hill but returned in 2002 to replace a scandal-tainted Sen. Bob Torricelli.

It seemed an interim move to bail out the Democratic Party, but the veteran lawmaker — the second-oldest member of the Senate and the only person in history elected to five Senate terms from New Jersey — is coming up on a decade-long second act. He has five years left on his term.

Grandma crackin’ a hip is one thing. The kin rally ’round, and she eventually gets back to doing the things that made her the family matriarch in the first place — simple tasks that aren’t going to affect the future of our nation for the next several years.

But one of our two Senators taking a fall is a whole other kettle of fish. We need our representatives conscious, creative, attentive, immersed in the game of life.

We can’t have their broadest proclamation be: “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.”
