New Canaan, Westport Rowers Earn Top Awards

NEW CANAAN AND WESTPORT, Conn. – New Canaan’s Charlie Cole and Westport’s Paul Green were named winners Tuesday in their categories of USRowing’s Fan’s Choice Awards.

Cole was named the National Team Rower of the Year. Green was named the Masters Rower of the Year. Both will be among the honorees at the Golden Oars Awards Dinner on Nov. 14 at the New York Athletic Club in New York City.

The awards were co-sponsored by USRowing and Row2k Media. The award winners were nominated and voted on based on their contributions and excellence in rowing.

Cole won a bronze medal in the Men’s Four at the 2012 Olympic Games in London with teammates Scott Gault, Glenn Ochal and Henrik Rummel. Cole is a nine-time national team member. He started his career at Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk.

Green, 88, has been battling Parkinson’s disease for nearly two decades. He trains every days and uses rowing to hold off the symptoms of his illness. He won a bronze medal in the lightweight men’s J single sculls at the Masters National Championships this summer.
