NEW CANAAN, Conn. Battling for a conference playoff spot and in need of a change of momentum, Ally Reilly gave the New Canaan High softball team just what the doctored ordered. The Rams sophomore threw a five-hit shutout against Greenwich, striking out ten in a thrilling 1-0 victory.
We came in knowing weve been kind of the underdogs lately because we havent been winning as much. So we came in ready to fight, Reilly said. This game is a complete shift for us.
Reilly seemed to get stronger as the game wore on, striking out the side to end the game in the seventh. Her only tough inning came in the fourth when she allowed three of her five hits. Jordan Ventura gunned down a would-be base stealer at second and Reilly got Lindsey Bemis to ground out with runners at first and third.
The Rams were actually outhit in the game, knocking just three hits off of Greenwich starter Allison Kach. Venturas sister, Cydney , provided the games only offense with an RBI triple in the bottom of the third, which scored Courtney Rogers.
The Rams left seven runners on base, including the bases loaded in the fifth. But luckily Reilly was dominant enough to hold off the Cardinals.
The seventh was tough. I was pretty stressed out, Reilly said with a laugh. I was pretty pumped up, though. The close game kept the energy up and my teammates behind me. Theres really nothing else you can ask for.
The two teams entered Mondays game with identical records and tied for the eighth and final spot in the conference playoff standings. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Rams.
New Canaan (9-6) hosts fourth-ranked Fairfield Ludlowe on Wednesday at Waveny Park for a 4 p.m. game.
