NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Despite weekend reports that NBC News is pressuring embattled anchor Brian Williams to resign , the New York Daily News said Monday that the network news chief wants the New Canaan resident back in his seat at "NBC Nightly News."

NBC News chief Andrew Lack believes that viewers want the popular news anchor back despite reports that he has been less than honest in telling tales of his adventures as a newsman, the Daily News says. Lack reportedly has the final say in Williams' fate.

Also, according to the Daily News, Williams has told confidants he won't leave NBC News unless he is fired.

Lack, a long-time Williams pal, returned to NBC in early March, and as chairman of NBC News will have the final say over the anchor's fate. He and Williams go back a long way — he served as the president of the news division from 1993 to 2003 and had a hand at positioning Williams for the "Nightly News" position in the first place.

Williams was suspended on Feb. 10 for six months without pay after making a statement days earlier on the news clarifying that he "incorrectly remembered details in a 2003 reporting mission to Iraq."

Further reports have surfaced questioning Williams' journalistic integrity. The Washington Post reported last week that NBC News, in its internal investigation, has turned up 11 instances where Williams embellished the truth.
